The ethnopop artist Vilma Jää is a singer, composer, violinist, researcher and master of music working in the fields of folk music and pop, as well as an activist who takes a stand with her music.

Vilma Jää’s debut album Kosto was published in the fall of 2023. The album offers both catchy ethnopop bangers and acoustic contemporary folk music tracks. True to its name, “Kosto” (Revenge) takes you on a journey from the depths of trauma and injustice through revenge fantasies to survival.

She has also gained world fame for her role as a folk singer in Kaija Saariaho’s opera Innocence, which has been praised in the media around the world.

Vilma Jää combines centuries old stories with electronic music. Her music shifts between acoustic and electronic sounds, combining instruments typical of folk music such as kantele, harmonium and fiddle with synthetic beats as Finno-Ugric tradition flirts with pop aesthetics. In her editorialized feminist music she approaches current topics through history revealing how miserably little the world has changed especially with issues regarding women’s rights.
