New Pauanne album is coming this autumn! The album will feature vocalist Karoliina Kantelinen (Värttinä) and percussionist Abdissa “Mamba” Assefa!
“A duo with 40 vocalists” – Pauanne’s unique use of old archive tapes honors the legacy of Finnish cattle callers and folk singers from the past. Their second album will be released in 2024.
Stories of spells and curses, the dreams of a shepherd, 17th-century witch hunts and magical iron fences that repel invaders. Pauanne’s archive research has unearthed a wealth of songs from the long-lost traditions of Finnish folk music. Pauanne is fascinated by the “outrageous beliefs” of the past and its endemic prejudices, paranoia, fear of foreigners and persecution of women. In their songs and videos they show that these traits are still very much alive, just dressed in modern clothes.
In recent times Pauanne has performed at WOMEX The World Music Expo, WOMAD Las Palmas, Folkelarm Oslo, Nordic Folk Alliance Gothenburg and Haapavesi Folk to name a few.
