Folk musician, singer-songwriter, and kantele artist Maija Kauhanen is an explosively powerful and versatile one-woman orchestra who has rapidly built an impressive international career. The foundation of Kauhanen’s art lies in the Finnish-Karelian tradition, including its instruments as well as playing and singing techniques.
Central to Maija Kauhanen’s strong performances are the stories and lyrics of her songs, which often focus on the fates of women of different ages. The texts address challenges in relationships, domestic violence, and fears, but also include joy, comfort, and hope.
Kauhanen’s debut album Raivopyörä (2017) received rave reviews, and the international career that followed has spanned over 30 countries. Raivopyörä was awarded numerous prestigious art prizes in Finland, including an Emma Award for Best Ethno Album.
On her second album Menneet (2022), her distinctive approach to holistic creation grew even stronger. In live performances, traditional kanteles and new playing techniques are complemented by an astonishing array of percussion instruments, various bells, and experimental soundscapes. The combination of these elements creates an innovative, intense one-woman band that fuses different eras, techniques, and styles, captivating audiences everywhere.
